Positive! What Now? 5 Essential Steps After Confirming Your Pregnancy
You just saw the two lines (or the word "pregnant") on the test. Congratulations! It's a unique moment that can bring a whirlwind of emotions: immense joy, surprise, perhaps butterflies in your stomach from anxiety or uncertainty. It's all normal!
If the first question that came to mind was "Okay... what do I do now?", you're in the right place. Take a deep breath! The Gotu.pt team is here to help you navigate the essential next steps. Let's get organized, shall we?
Here are 5 important steps to take right after confirming your pregnancy:
Step 1: Take a Deep Breath and Make an Appointment at the Health Center
Even if you've taken a pharmacy test, the next step is to confirm your pregnancy and begin prenatal care with the National Health Service (SNS) or a private doctor, if you prefer.
-
In the NHS: Contact your Health Center (Family Health Unit - USF or Personalized Health Care Unit - UCSP). You can always call or visit the service desk in person.
-
What to say: Explain that you have a positive pregnancy test and would like to schedule your first pregnancy monitoring appointment. They will refer you to your Family Doctor or to the Maternal Health Nurse .
-
Objective: This first interaction is crucial to begin the free and regular medical care you are entitled to throughout your pregnancy.
Step 2: Prepare for Your First Prenatal Visit
This first official appointment is very important. During it, the healthcare professional (family doctor or nurse) will:
-
Confirm pregnancy (sometimes they ask for a blood test).
-
Calculate estimated gestational age and Expected Date of Delivery (EDD) , usually based on the Date of Last Menstrual Period (LMP) . (Pssst! You can use our [Gotu.pt Pregnancy Calculator] to get an idea!).
-
Ask questions about your medical history (illnesses, surgeries, allergies, regular medications) and that of the baby's father.
-
Request the first blood and urine tests.
-
Prescribe the first ultrasound (usually done between 11 and 14 weeks).
-
Provide you with the Pregnancy Health Bulletin , an essential document that will accompany you to all appointments and during childbirth.
-
Provide initial guidance on lifestyle and supplementation.
A tip we wish we had but didn't do: Bring a list of all your questions so you don't forget anything!
Step 3: Start with the Essentials: Folic Acid
Your doctor or nurse will probably prescribe it for you. folic acid (Vitamin B9) immediately.
-
Why? It is essential for the healthy development of the baby's neural tube (which forms the brain and spinal cord), especially in the first few weeks.
-
When? Ideally, it should be started before to get pregnant, but it's crucial to start as soon as you find out you're pregnant.
-
Other Supplements: They may also recommend iodine and, later, other supplements depending on your needs and test results. Always trust the doctor's prescription.
Step 4: Small Adjustments, Big Care: Lifestyle
Right now, there are some important things to keep in mind to protect your health and that of your baby:
-
Zero Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs: It is essential to completely cut out the consumption of these substances.
-
Medication: Talk to your doctor about all the medication you're taking (even over-the-counter ones). Some medications are safe, others need to be adjusted or stopped. Never stop taking chronic medication without talking to your doctor!
-
Safe Food: Start paying attention to certain precautions, such as avoiding raw or undercooked meat, fish, and eggs, unpasteurized cheeses, and washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
-
Listen to Your Body: Fatigue is real! Rest whenever possible.
Step 5: Don't Forget About Yourself: Physical and Emotional Well-Being
This beginning is a roller coaster! It's normal to feel a mix of happiness, fear, excitement, and worry.
-
Validate Your Feelings: Allow yourself to feel everything. There are no "right" or "wrong" emotions.
-
Share: Talk to your partner, family, or trusted friends about how you feel.
-
Take care of yourself: Stay hydrated, try to eat a balanced diet (even if you feel nauseous, try to eat what you can) and consider relaxing activities like light walks (if your doctor approves).
