In a violent world, full of prejudice, conflicts, and misunderstandings, we eagerly seek solutions that improve the relationship we have with others. Unfortunately, for centuries, our culture has taught us to think and speak in ways that perpetuate conflict, violence, and even pain.
But knowing how to listen to what is actually being said by the other person and being able to express what we truly mean might seem simple, but it is not. In this work, Marshall Rosenberg presents the Nonviolent Communication method, which combines practical skills with powerful awareness and vocabulary, to help anyone achieve what they desire peacefully.
When we understand the true needs we have, we create common ground with our interlocutors, and relationships become more satisfying and profound. In this work, Marshall Rosenberg teaches us to discover the feelings pulsing within us behind appearances. He also shows us that our actions are based on human needs that we all seek to fulfill.
Nonviolent Communication results from the integration of 4 aspects:
Awareness: a set of principles that support a life of empathy, collaboration, courage, authenticity, and freedom.
Language: understanding how words contribute to connection or distance.
Communication: knowing how to ask for what we want, how to listen to others even when they have different opinions from ours, and how to move towards solutions that work for everyone.
Influence: sharing "power with others" instead of using "power over others."
