There's no denying it: a nagging cough can be really uncomfortable. 😔

It’s annoying, especially when some studies say that over-the-counter cough syrups aren’t always effective at combating symptoms and treating the underlying problem. That said, there are some great options for relieving coughs, and several of them include essential oils.
There are a variety of essential oils that can be used. Each oil works slightly differently; some have anti-inflammatory properties, while others can help eliminate bacteria and improve circulation.
They're great tools to have around when that annoying cough hits.
The 7 Essential Oils That Help Fight Coughs
1. Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is often used for upper respiratory tract infections, including coughs. It has antimicrobial, antiviral, and expectorant qualities that can help combat associated symptoms. To use it, add one or two drops to a steam bath.
2. Peppermint
Peppermint is an excellent antispasmodic and decongestant. To use it, add it to a steam bath or mix it with a carrier oil or lotion and rub it on your chest. Additionally, research suggests that peppermint oil has mood-boosting effects, which is a bonus when it comes to fighting a persistent cough.
3. Rosemary
Rosemary oil is used in many chest congestion tonics. It has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which makes it great for getting rid of a persistent cough. To use rosemary, apply it to your body or inhale it.
4. Lemon
Not only does lemon oil smell amazing, it also contains limonene, a vasorelaxant that can help relax blood vessels, which can be beneficial for coughs. You can add a few drops of lemon oil to a carrier oil and rub it on your chest and neck. Bonus: it also leaves a nice citrus scent. 😉
5. Thieves
Thieves is a must-have in my bag at all times. It’s a powerful blend of essential oils known for its purifying and immune-boosting properties, making it effective at relieving coughs and fighting respiratory infections. Typical Thieves ingredients include cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, rosemary and lemon, each of which contribute to this relief. (Recommended for adults only)
6. Tea Tree
Tea tree oil isn’t just great for your hair; it’s also a powerful anti-infective oil. It’s excellent for respiratory infections thanks to its decongestant and expectorant properties. To use it, you can diffuse a few drops into the air or add several drops to a carrier oil and rub it into your chest and neck.
7. Frankincense
Frankincense is excellent for respiratory infections. It can also help relieve tension and elevate your mood. To use frankincense to combat coughs, place it in a steam bath and inhale for 5 to 10 minutes, or use it in an aromatherapy diffuser.
What to Consider When Using Essential Oils to Treat a Cough
In general, essential oils are easy and safe tools to help fight coughs. Nothing serious, but there are some rules to keep in mind when using them:
- Dilute the oil: Use a carrier oil such as almond, grapeseed, avocado or coconut oil, or use aloe vera gel.
- Keep the concentration low for a steam bath: Usually, one drop is enough. If you need a stronger effect, try two drops, but no more than that, as higher concentrations can be aggressive to the body.
- Close your eyes during a steam bath: To avoid eye irritation caused by the oils.
- Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Be careful when using essential oils on young children: As always, consulting your doctor before using any specific oil is always a safer option, especially if you think there may be an allergic reaction.
- Avoid certain oils if you have chronic health conditions: Avoid using eucalyptus, peppermint, and oregano if you have a chronic health condition, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; however, frankincense, lemon, and tea tree oil are generally safe. Always consult your doctor if you have concerns.
- Be careful with citrus oils and sun exposure: Citrus oils, such as lemon, can cause irritation or burns if applied to the skin before sun exposure.
Consider essential oils as a complement to your treatment, not a permanent solution. If your cough persists, doesn’t seem to be getting better, or is getting worse, it’s a good idea to see your doctor for evaluation. 😊 This could be a sign of a more serious underlying infection that needs treatment.
Taking care of yourself is essential to regaining your health.
