Halloween costumes for kids: the age-by-age guide

The question we get every year in the last week of October is always the same: what costume is suitable for this age. Here is the answer, from six months to eight years old.

Babies, from 6 to 12 months

At this age, the costume must be clothing. No hoods falling over the eyes, no masks, nothing that drags on the floor for those still crawling. Bodysuits are put on in the morning and stay on all day.

From 12 months to 4 years

The age of short capes. They are worn over the clothes the child is already wearing, which solves the chill of October and the tantrum of a tight suit. And they can be taken off in two seconds when it starts getting warm indoors.

The trick that saves an argument.

Put the costume on once, at home, a few days before. You'll know if it itches, if it's too tight, or if the hood falls over the eyes, and you'll still have time to exchange it.

From 2 to 6 years

By now, they have their own formed opinion. This is the age when the child chooses the character and insists on keeping it all night, so it's worth letting them choose.

From 3 to 8 years

Long capes, full-body costumes, and a desire to really scare someone. Sizes from 98 to 128 cm cover most of this phase, and the capes can handle two or three years of growth.

Before going out at night.

A child dressed in black cannot be seen on the street. Put something light-colored, reflective, or glow-in-the-dark over the outside of the costume, and avoid masks that block side vision. An adult should always follow behind, even on familiar streets.

The accessories that complete the costume

A hat and a cape are already a full costume. And the bag is not just a detail: without it, the candies end up in pockets and on the floor.

For the afternoon before the night

Between lunch and sundown, there is a whole afternoon of asking how much time is left. These four things solve it.

What if the question is "Pão por Deus"?

In Portugal, October 31st is the eve. Our tradition is on the following day, November 1st, with a cloth bag and a phrase at the door, and it was born from the 1755 earthquake. Many families do both: the costume at night, the bag in the morning.
