The Importance of Margin in Footwear: Why We Recommend Extra Space?

A Importância da Margem no Calçado: Porque Recomendamos Espaço Extra?

When using our barefoot shoe calculator, it's natural to have a pertinent question: why is the recommended size often larger than the exact measurement of your foot? This difference corresponds to the comfort and growth margin, an essential element in respectful footwear, and we would like to clarify its importance.

What is Margin and Why is it Necessary?

The margin is the additional space, measured in millimeters, between the tip of your longest toe and the inner end of the shoe. Contrary to what you might think, the foot is not static; its size and shape change dynamically during walking and other activities.

Including an adequate margin serves two fundamental purposes:

  1. Allowing Natural Foot Movement:
    • Toe Splay: During walking, especially in the propulsion phase, the toes need space to spread out laterally. A shoe that is too tight restricts this natural movement.

      • Slight Arch Lengthening: The plantar arch can flatten and lengthen slightly under body weight.

      • Gait Dynamics: The margin ensures that the toes do not collide with the front of the shoe, preventing discomfort. This functional space is a pillar of respectful footwear.

  2. Accommodating Growth:

Children's feet are constantly developing. An adequate margin ensures that the footwear can be used comfortably for a reasonable period, keeping pace with natural growth.

How the Calculator Applies the Margin?

Our tool was developed to simplify choosing the correct size:

  1. When you enter the foot measurement (in mm), the calculator compares it with the size charts ̷m̷e̷a̷s̷u̷r̷e̷d̷ ̷b̷y̷ ̷t̷h̷e̷ ̷m̷a̷n̷u̷f̷a̷c̷t̷u̷r̷e̷r̷s̷, we do not rely on manufacturer charts, we measure every shoe that arrives at Gotu, because they very rarely match. Sometimes we are even responsible for manufacturers changing their own charts.
  2. Based on the type of footwear, it applies the considered ideal margin:
    • Closed Footwear (Boots, Sneakers): A margin between 8 to 11 millimeters is recommended.
    • Open Footwear (Sandals): A smaller margin is recommended, between 3 to 7 millimeters.

  3. The result in the "✅ Ideal Size" section already includes this calculated margin.
  4. Results in the "⚠️ Non-Ideal Margin" or "❌ Inadequate Size" sections indicate that the margin would be outside the optimal range or the measurement is outside the model's size range.

Margin as an Essential Component of Respectful Footwear

Ensuring this allowance is an important factor for healthy foot development. It allows for correct muscle and joint function and promotes intrinsic foot strength.

Did you understand? 😊

The margin calculated by our calculator is a functional space and of deliberate growth, aligned with the principles of respectful footwear. It represents our recommendation to ensure comfort, freedom of movement, and suitability for growth.
