Magnesium sulfate, or sulfate from magnetic stone, commonly known as Epsom salt, is a chemical compound that contains magnesium,

Uses in agriculture

In gardening, magnesium sulfate is used to correct magnesium deficiency in the soil (magnesium is an essential element in the formation of the chlorophyll molecule). It is commonly used in growing plants in orchards or pots when their soils lack sufficient magnesium, such as potatoes, roses, and tomatoes. The advantage of magnesium sulfate over other magnesium soil additives is its high solubility.

It is used exactly as a nutrient for plant life, in solutions intended for hydroponic cultivation

Medical use
Topically, it can be used to treat ingrown toenails. Oral magnesium sulfate and magnesium hydroxide are used as laxatives for pregnant women. Epsom salts are also available in gel form for topical application to wounds and painful areas. Intravenously, they are often used to reduce the intensity of cramps.

It is also used during pregnancy to prevent seizures or coma, known as eclampsia. It can also be used as a bronchodilator—once beta-agonist and anticholinergic drugs have desensitized their respective receptors—in severe asthma exacerbations. It can also be used in nebulized form to relieve asthma symptoms, or administered intravenously to treat severe asthma attacks.

Other uses
Magnesium sulfate is also used as bath salts , particularly in floatation therapy, because high concentrations of this salt dissolved in water increase the solution's density, causing a human body to float like a buoy. It has traditionally been used to prepare foot baths for relaxation purposes. In some parts of the world (such as New Zealand), it is added to homemade beverages; in this case, the sulfate radical is not important, because it is magnesium that provides a flavor somewhere between acidic and bitter, due to its Mg2+ ion, which acts as a flavoring agent.

In the aquarium hobby, Epsom salt is used to treat changes in the swim bladder, an organ that controls the gas pressure capacity of the fish and allows it to swim at different depths. This condition is very common in ornamental fish fed flake or floating foods, because when they swallow their food, the fish also ends up swallowing atmospheric air. It is a very common condition in goldfish (goldfish or the famous bridal veils). During the crisis, the fish hangs upside down and cannot feed properly. The water flow often ends up carrying the fish, which loses its quality of life and, if not treated quickly, can die. For treatment, the sick fish is isolated and Epsom salt is diluted in dechlorinated water with an oxygenator, then the fish is placed in it. Salt stimulates the fish's intestines, acting as a laxative, eliminating feces containing air residue, which causes the fish to lose the ability to properly regulate its swimming.

Magnesium sulfate is classified and prepared with different degrees of purity, according to its various uses. Agricultural grade, used in the field and stored alongside pesticides and other agricultural products, should not be confused with food or analytical grade, which must meet different purity standards.
