Pelvic physical therapy, also known as urogynecological physical therapy, is a specialty of physical therapy that focuses on preventing, treating, and rehabilitating dysfunctions of the pelvic floor and lower abdominal region. The pelvic floor is a complex structure made up of muscles, ligaments, and tissues that support organs such as the bladder, uterus, vagina, and rectum.
This area of physical therapy can help people of all ages and both sexes, but it is especially useful for women who are preparing for childbirth, who have recently had babies, who are going through menopause, or who have problems associated with urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, sexual dysfunction, chronic pelvic pain, among other conditions.
- Education on the anatomy and function of the pelvic floor and lower abdominal region;
- Specific exercises to strengthen or relax the pelvic floor muscles;
- Biofeedback techniques, which help people better understand and control their pelvic muscles;
- Manual techniques to relieve pain and improve pelvic tissue mobility;
- Advice on lifestyle modification, such as changes in diet and exercise routine.
In many cases, pelvic floor physical therapy can offer a non-surgical alternative to treating these conditions. Pelvic floor physical therapy can also be an important part of recovery after certain surgeries.
